Bighorn River Winter Fishing Update

Rainbow that ate a sowbug

Unseasonably warm and dry weather pattern of December and January has continued into February here in the Bighorn Valley. With the moderate winter temperatures the Bighorn river has seen a significant uptick in anglers. Anglers are finding success fishing indicator nymph rigs in medium paced to slow moving runs.

The fly patterns one needs to fish this time of year is pretty basic; with orange scuds and sowbugs being your main offerings. The worm will bring some fish to the net as you move lower down in the river. Midges are just starting to show and will become more a more significant source of forage for the trout as we move closer to March.

Streamer fishing has been good early and late in the day and on overcast days. White and olive has been a good color combination. A sink tip this time of year is always a benefit.

Water clarity is good throughout the river. The upper 3 miles still has weed growth on the bottom of the river. Anytime you can get a day on the river during the dead of winter is a win in itself. The fly shop is open for shuttles, flies and lodging everyday. please give us a call with any questions. 406-666-2375
