Dry fly fishing has begun on the Bighorn River. Pale Morning Dun Emergences are happening daily. The hatch is strongest in the lower starting about 10 miles downriver from the dam to Mallards Landing. As water temperatures increase we expect to see the hatch move up river towards three mile access as water temperatures break the 50 degree mark upriver. The emergence of these size 14 and 16 insects is best in the afternoons and on overcast days. Look for spinner falls to begin occurring as the hatch builds in intensity.
Nymph fishing has been as good as it has been all year the past few days. The fish have moved up into prime feeding lies and are utilizing the entire water column to feed on sowbug and PMD Nymphs. Tailwater sowbug and frenchies continue to produce the best results under an indicator.
Streamer fishing on overcast days and in low light periods of the day has also been effective. With lower water flows, around 2000 cfs, look to fish your streamers not just on the banks, but mid river also. A sinking leader added to your floating line is an effective tactic when fishing streamers in the summer season.
