Bighorn River Early September Fishing Report

The Bighorn River is in great shape, with flows around 2200 cfs and water temperatures in the 50’s. The river is fishing well from Afterbay Access all the

Bruce with a nice one that ate a size 18 Black Caddis Dry

way down to Mallard’s Access.

Black Caddis are dominating the dry fly fishing. The Black Caddis emergence is in the latter half of its seasonal emergence, with the hatch strongest in the first 6 miles of the river. Afternoon and Evening is still the best time to fish this hatch. There are more and more Tan Caddis each day in the 3 – B stretch of the river and we might see these bugs move up river over the next weeks. There is no fishable numbers of Tricos at this time, as we get asked this question daily. Terrestrial fishing is ok with ants and beetles, hopper fishing is slow.

Nymph fishing is consistent throughout all sections of the river. A sowbug or scud up top with a black caddis pupa or frenchie has been the go to rig. You can work the worm in if you are fishing lower in the river.

With the quality of fish and the water conditions, September is a great time to be fly fishing the Bighorn River. Shop is open daily, give us a call with any questions. 406-666-2375.
