Bighorn River Early May Fishing Report

Bighorn River spring fishing is in full swing. The resident trout of the Bighorn are in great shape with plenty of 18+ inch fish being caught regularly.

Baetis/bwo nymphs are providing ample forage for Bighorn River trout

Fishing has been most productive with nymphs.  Sowbugs and Baetis nymph imitations are best. Tailwater Sowbugs in sizes 14 and 16 are working well, along with #18 Wonder Nymphs and Flashback Quill Nymphs. An Two-Tone Scud or Orange Scud should also be considered as an “up fly.” We’re catching fish on a variety of midge pupa as well, with the #18 Tung Teaser being especially good in the morning.

Not a lot of dry fly fishing right now, but if you’re willing to fish later in the day you can find some rising fish. #20 Sipper Midges and CDC Midges are productive, as long as Baetis patterns, such as the Cripple Thor

The river is at a great flow for both wade and float anglers.  Please note that warm air temperatures and spring rain can cause Soap Creek – a tributary 10 miles down from the dam can make the river off color.

Feel free to call the shop with any questions 406-666-2375. The fly shop is open daily from 7am – 6pm for all of your fly and equipment needs.
