The Bighorn continues to produce big fish after big fish this summer! Nymph fishing, dry fly fishing and streamer have been effective daily.
PMD’s and black caddis emergence remains strong. The best hatch has been from Three Mile – Bighorn Access and Bighorn Access down to Mallards. We are starting to see a few more bugs emerging around 3 mile and the upper 3 with water temperatures from the dam hovering around 50 degrees now. Terrestrials are also producing a few nice fish all along the way also.
We expect dry fly fishing to remain consistent for the month of August with PMD’s and Black Caddis, especially the latter. Will we see traces this year? Your guess is as good as ours – TBD.
Those anglers that are good at cleaning their rig are having success fishing nymphs under an indicator. Shorter rigs with weighted flies help dealing with the moss and algae. Tailwater sowbug, orange scuds, frenchies, black caddis pupa and worms have been working throughout the river.
